“Food waste is one of the major challenges for humanity in the modern age. We intend to be at the forefront of the fight for the better tomorrow. All of us have the choice to become part of the solution”

Andrzej WolanCEO of Fresh Inset S.A.

From the beginning of our work, we wondered how to turn our knowledge of organic chemistry into a tool to create a better world. The answer came to us when we asked ourselves: is it possible to change the overwhelming waste of food? How can a chemist in harmony with nature make a difference in reducing the throwing away of overripe fruits and vegetables. And so we defined the enemy we had to stop – in the macro world it was food waste, in the micro world it was ethylene, responsible for aging.

Fresh Inset introduces technology based on 1-MCP. The 1-MCP molecule is structurally similar to ethylene, a naturally occurring plant hormone that occurs in all fruits and vegetables. Ethylene helps produce grow and ripen, but after produce is harvested, causes over-ripening and spoilage. 1-MCP works by blocking the ethylene from binding to receptors in plant cells, which slows down respiration and temporarily delays the ripening process. Fresh Inset created a game-changing method of binding 1-MCP with a variety of carriers that revolutionized its use in the whole logistic chain.

Vidre+ products can be applied seamlessly in all stages of the logistic chain. Fruits and vegetables, including pre-cut products, are significantly improved by the use of Vidre+, as well as floral products, including cut flowers and potted plants. Vidre+ has freshness and shelf-life benefits for both climacteric produce (produce that continues to ripen post-harvest) and non-climacteric produce (produce that stops ripening post-harvest).
Vidre+ delivers sustainable and affordable technology for all stakeholders of the food-chain. By using Vidre+ in the produce industry, we can improve produce quality for the consumer and extend shelf life thereby reducing food waste. We can also provide the produce industry with more flexible inventory management and logistics options. In some produce categories improved freshness protection can open maritime shipment vs. air freight shipment. So much energy goes into our food production and transport systems, that spoiled food is a tremendous economic and life quality burden on society. Vidre+ addresses these issues in many categories of produce that were not possible with traditional application techniques of 1-MCP.

Fresh Inset brings to the market a game-changing technology that prolongs freshness of fruits and vegetables with the use of award winning 1-MCP (1-methylcyclopropene) technology in a non-invasive, effective and scalable way that will not alter existing food handling processes.
The 1-MCP molecule is structurally similar to ethylene, a naturally occurring plant hormone that occurs in all fruits and vegetables. Ethylene helps produce grow and ripen, but after produce is harvested causes over-ripening and spoilage. 1-MCP works by blocking the ethylene receptors in plant cells, which slows down respiration and temporarily delays the ripening process, maintaining the qualities associated with freshness.

What is Ethylene and what does it do?
· A natural plant hormone that plays a role in ripening
· Triggers several degradative biochemical pathways
· Accelerates senescence & tissue degradation of the produce
· Accelerates fruit softening
· Accelerates oxidative processes and vitamin loss
· Allows for more post-harvest disorders & diseases to develop

1-MCP has been used worldwide for almost 20 years and is widely recognized as a safe and excellent way to protect produce post-harvest from the damaging effects of ethylene. Since the molecule is a gas, traditionally it has been applied in air tight rooms over a 24-hour period to allow for adequate exposure time before the gas escapes to the atmosphere. Vidre+ is a patented technology for coating surfaces of labels and stickers with humidity activated 1-MCP. Once exposed to high humidity in produce packaging, the stickers gradually release 1-MCP to protect the produce from the damaging effects of ethylene during storage, shipment and at the retail market. These simple to use stickers do not require air tight rooms and once the produce is packaged, it can be immediately shipped or go into storage. In either case, your produce will be protected from ethylene.

Fresh Inset has developed a patent-protected application of a second generation of 1-MCP of the highest purity on the market. Vidre+ sticker technology brings simple to use Ethylene management to the entire produce industry. Adaptation of the technology requires no changes to current practices. Produce packers are already using stickers on boxes, clamshells and as individual PLUs on larger fruit. Using Vidre+ stickers require no changes in current commercial practice, but now provides the industry with a functional sticker that has the added benefit of freshness protection.

The main difference between Fresh Inset and its competitors is the delivery mechanism for 1-MCP release. Traditional delivery methods require airtight rooms or containers to deliver an effective dosage over the needed 24-hour treatment period. While current competitive solutions are focused on delivering 1-MCP in an immediate release, the foundation of Fresh Inset’s delivery is a combination of timed-release and gradual-release of 1-MCP, allowing for a more effective application – an innovation that is sought after by our partners. In the case of our products:
· 1-MCP release begins 2-3 hours after exposure to the produce,
· Over the next 30 hours release continues,
· After 48 hours, there is no measurable 1-MCP residue remaining.
That enables the gas to effectively bind to the ethylene receptors of the produce in vented (or unvented) boxes, clamshells, etc., which opens up 1-MCP technology to markets that here-to-fore were not available.

A simple and effective way to use Vidre+ is by using one sticker applied to each box of produce. The size of the sticker needed depends on the size of the box. Stickers will release 1-MCP only when packaged fruit raises humidity levels to >85%.
Since Vidre+ comes in a simple to use sticker format, fruit packers and shippers can make real time decisions as to which produce they want to utilize the technology based on seasonal factors, time to market, retailer requirements, and shipping distance. With traditional 1-MCP products, entire storage rooms had to be treated, making it difficult for packers to segregate produce which most needs ethylene protection from produce that may not.
