Fresh Inset, in partnership with Avery Dennison, has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Packaging Europe Sustainability Award for its breakthrough Vidre+™ smart label — a game-changing innovation in sustainable packaging.

The Packaging Europe Sustainability Awards are among the most respected recognitions in the packaging industry, celebrating innovation that drives real environmental impact. Vidre+™ was selected as the winner from a competitive field of global finalists, highlighting its potential to scale sustainable change across the fresh produce sector.

Fresh produce loses over $1 trillion globally each year to natural aging and spoilage. These losses account for up to 10% of annual greenhouse gas emissions. A few extra days of shelf life can make a measurable difference — reducing waste, emissions, and economic losses across the entire supply chain.

Vidre+™ addresses this challenge with a smart label that slows down ripening by gradually releasing a natural active compound (1-MCP) inside the packaging — without leaving any residue. Crucially, it integrates seamlessly into existing labelling workflows without requiring packaging redesign, infrastructure changes, or capital investment.

It can be applied flexibly — as a sticker or printed directly onto any base material, including compostable, recyclable, or biodegradable formats. The dosage is fully adjustable to match pack size or crop type, allowing it to support a wide variety of produce at any point post-harvest.

Vidre+™ demonstrates how innovations can unlock meaningful sustainability gains at scale — helping producers, retailers, and consumers benefit from fresher products, fewer losses, and a more efficient supply chain. We extend our thanks to everyone involved in this project on both the Avery Dennison and Fresh Inset teams, whose collaboration made this achievement possible.
